Today in History (1945) - The Enola Gay drops an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, killing 80,000 immediately and another 60,000 by the end of the year.

... and saves hundreds of thousands of lives that would have been lost on both sides (including many of those same people) had the US instead invaded mainland Japan.
