Today in History (1955) - In London, Bertrand Russell issued the Russell-Einstein Manifesto, which highlighted the dangers posed by nuclear weapons and called for world leaders to seek peaceful resolutions to international conflict a decade after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It was signed by 11 preeminent intellectuals and scientists, most notably Albert Einstein. Their efforts were rewarded forty years later with the 1995 Nobel Peace Prize.
